Open PracticeWorks on Your Windows Computer
PracticeWorks is a Windows desktop application. Find and double-click the PracticeWorks icon on your desktop or locate it in the Start Menu under Carestream Dental → PracticeWorks. Log in with your system administrator credentials.
Tip:
You will need a user account with Supervisor or full Administrative access to run the data export. Standard receptionist or front-desk logins will not have access to the export function.
Open Lists → People
In the PracticeWorks top menu bar, click "Lists". From the dropdown that appears, click "People". This opens the People/Patient search and management window, which is the starting point for the patient data export.

Note: PracticeWorks has a prerequisite setup requirement before you can export data. If this is your first time exporting, you will need to create a "Field Export Document" and an "AutoLink" before you can proceed to step 3. If those are already configured, skip to step 3.
Select All Patients for Export
In the People window, you will see your patient list. To select all patients, use Edit → Select All or Ctrl+A to select all records. Alternatively, use the Search/Filter tools to narrow the list first. Once all desired patients are selected, look for an "Actions" button or menu and click it.
Tip:
If you only see active patients and want inactive ones included, look for a "Show Inactive" or "Status" filter toggle in the People window and change it to "All".
Configure the Field Export Document
PracticeWorks requires a pre-configured "Field Export Document" that defines which fields to include in the export. If one has not been set up yet, you will need to create it first. Go to Management → Documents → Field Export and define the fields: First Name, Last Name, Home Phone, Cell Phone, Email, Status, Last Visit Date. If a Field Export Document already exists, select it and proceed.
Note:
If a Field Export Document does not exist yet, creating one requires supervisor-level access and may take 10-15 minutes. Contact your PracticeWorks administrator or Carestream Dental support (1-800-944-6365) for assistance if you are unsure how to configure this.
Run the Export via the Document Queue
After selecting patients and choosing your Field Export Document, PracticeWorks places the export in the "Document Queue" — a background processing area. Go to Management → Document Queue to find your export. Once the status shows as complete, click the export entry to access it. Choose to save it as a file on your computer.
Tip:
The Document Queue processes exports in the background — if you do not see it immediately, wait 2-3 minutes and refresh.
Verify the Exported File
Open the exported file in Excel to confirm it contains patient data. The file should be comma-delimited. If it opens as a single column of data, use Excel's Data → Text to Columns feature with "Comma" as the delimiter to split the columns properly.

Send to MedMasters
Upload the exported file using the secure MedMasters upload link provided by your account manager.
Note:
Do not email patient data files. Always use the secure MedMasters upload portal.

The export runs through a Document Queue rather than downloading instantly
PracticeWorks is a legacy Carestream Dental desktop product that is no longer actively developed — Carestream has migrated users toward Sensei Cloud
Many PracticeWorks practices are actively migrating to Curve Dental or other cloud systems — export all data before migrating
If the Field Export Document has never been configured, call Carestream Dental support (1-800-944-6365) — they can walk you through the one-time setup in about 15 minutes
If your practice has migrated to Carestream's Sensei Cloud platform, the export is much simpler: Reports → Patient List → Export to CSV
Make sure to include both Active and Inactive patients in your export configuration by not applying a status filter in the People window
